Many of you may face this problem: How to fix lama v4 blades vibration?

Here are some ways you may follow.

First of all, try the basic way first. To check the balance of blades by take them out, and put the middle on the tip of knife as a pivot. Then, you can add little strips of tape as balance weights.

Also, you have to check the servo, swashplate, rotor head, each blade, straightness of outer and inner shaft one by one separately to see if there is any jittering or vibration. After you verify that everything is no problem individually, now try to assemble them to see what would happen. But please note that even slight bent of flybar would cause vibration, in such case, better buy a new one.

After assembling, you may check again the blades by disconnecting another motor while testing one set of blade or flybar. Again, add tape to the middle of one blade, if vibration increase then work on another blade, otherwise add more tape on it until offset the oscillation.

Twist the blades to increase or decrease pitch. Since blades are elastic that it will spring back after twisting, you may have to repeat it few times. Adding pitch to the lower blade in this way would make it even better.

Tuning and setup involved in any kind of rc helicopter are about trial and error, be smart and innovative to the problem you faced and you will make it.

When you take your lama v4 out of the box, you may found that the shaft, swashplate and gears are too low for making the upper blades spin. And the lower blades may turn in a wrong direction. Here is a tutorial for fixing all these problems by leveling the swashplate. After that, your helicopter will be able to perform hand-free hovering and necessary for beginners to increase the stability. If you are going to move the pushrod to another hole on servo arm, swashplate leveling is essential too.

Before Swashplate Leveling

Please make sure that the lower main rotor hub is installed on the outer shaft correctly. The upper screw has to be lined up with the holes in outer shaft. Otherwise, the swashplate may be unable to level.

Make sure servo arm and servo pushrod are placed perpendicularly. This is important to attain a balanced and smooth motion for lama v4. If unfortunately it’ s not at 90 degree, then you better fix it. First, turn on the transmitter, together with the trim controls centered. After you see the red light on transmitter and green light on 4-in-1 control unit, power up the rc helicopter. Just remain the cyclic control at center, then unscrew the servo arm off the servo. Then relocate the servo arm until it is perpendicular to pushrod. Now, Fix the arm onto servo shaft and screw it back. Last, switch off the heli and then turn the transmitter off.

Lama V4 Swashplate Leveling

The key of swashplate leveling is to setup swashplate parallel with blades’ rotation plane. It is all done by hovering and the tuning afterwards. As the swashplate is not level at the beginning, ready to use cyclic control to hover in a larger space. When the heli is hovering, use trim controls to counteract forward or sideways movement of helicopter when cyclic stick is at center. After trimming complete, keep the trim controls where they are on transmitter. This is essential information for you to adjust the pushrods. Power off the helicopter and transmitter. If the trims are centered and helicopter was hovered without horizontal movements, congratulation, your swashplate is already leveled. But if the trims are not centered, then keep reading and adjust the pushrods.

Pushrods Adjustments

After removing the tail and canopy, look at pushrods from the back of your lama v4. From the picture below, you can see that left one controls forward/rearward movement(elevator) and the right one controls left/right movement (aileron).

Forward/rearward (elevator) pushrod adjustment

If the elevator trim is set in a forward position, then you have to lengthen the pushrod. This result the cyclic pitch forward, imply that the trim will move back to the center. Adjust the pushrod in 1/2 turn increments and re-attach to swashplate. Pushrod should be lengthened by disconnect and unscrew it from swashplate ball joint. Reconnect pushrod to swashplate ball joint after adjustment.

If elevator trim is set in a rearward position, then elevator pushrod have to be shortened. All the steps are similar to above, but make it opposite.

Left/right (aileron) pushrod adjustment

If the aileron trim is set on left, then the aileron pushrod have to be lengthened. Just like what procedure above for lengthen elevator trim.

It is more or less the same for shortening the aileron pushrod, when the aileron trim is set toward right.

Now you can fly your lama v4 with much better performance!

Esky Lama V4 Review

As Lama V4 was being granted as one of the popular beginner fliers, it has great performance when flying indoor. As it is not designated for outdoor flight, so it is a little bit difficult to withstand the strong winds because of its light weight. Although Lama V4 can only be fly outdoor with a very little wind, there are some modifications to enhance its outdoor flying performance. Due to the co-axial design of Lama V4, the torque of blades are canceled out, but with the trade off of less maneuverability. It would be better to fly with certain altitude to prevent its unpredictable performance in small space.

Lama V4 enable to fly forwards and backwards in circle indoor without difficulties, also it is endurable towards crashes. With such a light weight, it is not easy to be damaged even fall from 10 feet ! Also, the flybar has a smart design which make it pop out safely during crash.

Aggressive changes in direction may leads to blade crash, which the tilting lower blades hit with the upper blades. But as you know, Lama V4 is not a helicopter with high speed, so manage it gently to fly around will definitely have more fun. Whatever, it is still perfect for beginners to get familiar with the basic maneuver of helicopters.

Esky Lama V4 Mechanism

Turning the direction of Lama V4 about the vertical axis (yaw) is achieved by changing the relative speeds of the top and bottom blades/motors. However, this may alter the lift, thus changing the altitude. Fore-back motion and rolling are performed by 2 servos which tilt the swashplate.

With the 7.4V, 800 mah LiPo pack stock battery which is able to support flight time around 10 minutes. Charging time is near an hour to get fully charged. The balancing connector of two cell pack assure the cells capacity would be charged evenly.

The upper set of rotor blades are stabilized by a weighted flybar which counters tilting movements. The lower set of rotor blades are designed to steer the helicopter by tilting a swashplate which in turn tilts the entire rotor by changing the pitch in a complicated process called “cyclic”.

Xtreme Blade

This is a very popular upgrade for lama v4 pilots, as it is at low cost and very easy to setup. After you replace the stock E-sky blade with the Xtreme blade, you will found it offer much greater lift, thus require less throttle input to lift into hover. The blades were designated as thicker, sturdier, and nearly indestructible.

Xtreme Blade Features

The cross section shape is different to the old blade in a way of better airfoil shape, and it will generate larger upward force.

Since the upward force generated is larger, the Helicopter require less RPM( rotation per minute) to drive the blade, less current draw by motor thus you have longer flying time.

Less vibration of heli due to lower RPM is required, the helicopter will become more stable in flying.

Because of the Airfoil shape of blade, the front edge of blade is thicker than the old blade. It is more durable and impact resistant.

Pros

Larger lifting force

Very stable at low attitude – especially for beginners to undergo fine tune landings

Much durable in crashing

Quieter

Easy to install

Cons

Harder flying feel, because of higher sensitivity

heavier than stock blade

Conclusion

Nearly 100% lama v4 owner stated this is a must-have-upgrade for this rc helicopter. All in all, xtreme blades enhance it’ s performance greatly, pilots with little experience should not miss it. For those who is first time to fly with rc helicopter, better accumulate more flying hours with the E-sky stock blades before that.

ABOUT LAMA V4

In July, 2007 Lama v4 was produced by E-Sky, a well-known RC helicopters manufacturer in China. Together with Lama, Lama V2, Lama V3 and Lama V4, these are series of coaxial remote control helicopter targeting beginner of RC helicopters. There are 3 colors for Lama V4: Blue Lama V4, silver Lama V4 and the orange Lama V4 upgrade.

Lama V4 is Ready-to-Fly(RTF) out of the box, which is common in micro-helicopters. This coaxial RC helicopter carry a 4-in-1 electronic control unit combining functions of receiver, mixer, gyroscope and electronic speed control. It manages 2 motors speed to control altitude, heading hold and yaw.

4 Channel of 2.4GHz intelligent spread spectrum transmission technology, digital DSK coding technology, together with new digital servos, ensure a quick response when controlling Lama V4. In addition, it allows couples of helicopters to fly in the same area, thus enhancing the flying experience with friends.

The transmitter and receiver modules use FM modulation for the radio signal carrier and Pulse-position modulation (PPM) for the control signal.

Lama v4 adopted simplified coaxial rotor system, which are two paris of fixed-pitch counter-rotating blades. Lower one is fully controllable by a swashplate, the upper one is only stabilized by inertial fly bar. This make it perfect for indoor flight.
